It’s easy to make a buck. It’s a lot tougher to make a difference – Tom Brokaw

I keep thinking about what I am going to do when I’m ‘unemployed’, so much so that this weekend I have been busily trying to stop myself thinking about what I am going to do when I am unemployed. I cleaned the fridge, bathed the dog, attempted to giver her a hair cut, mopped the floor, washed clothes, swept, cleaned the stove, rearranged stuff…

I was asked ‘the question’ so many times on Friday night…and I provided an array of answers:

Let Sleeping Children Lie

‘I’m taking some time off.’

‘I’m going to sleep.’

‘I’m cleaning the house.’

‘I’m going to write…lots.’

‘I’m hanging with my dog.’

‘I’m spending time with family.’

‘I’ll start my book.’

‘I’ll work out whether I change careers, or not.’

‘I don’t know. I don’t want to rush into anything.’

‘I’ll decide on my month off.’

They are all fairly airy fairy answers, and they possibly didn’t provide many people with a feeling of assurance. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is that I know what I want, what I don’t want, what is important, and what isn’t.

What is important is my health, my friends, my family, and my happiness. What isn’t is everything that gets in the way of that.

And what I want? It’s to make a difference. Unfortunately, if I tell certain people that they just scoff. So, instead of telling, I’ll just go ahead and do it anyway.

Stay tuned for the start of ‘The Beauty of Difference‘ series, kicking off on Reflections From a Red Head on 1 September 2011.

  1. You go girl! I walked away from a job years ago making $50K+ a year because it was destroying me all the way to my spirit. You follow your heart and keep the faith. Chin up!

PS…quitting that job lead me to travel nursing and some of the greatest adventures of my life. There are hidden blessings everywhere.

    • I think I’m doing ok keeping my chin up. The old me would have been so incredibly stressed and would have just taken one of the 1st jobs offered. I know I’ve definitely made progress in my self-development hehe. I need to hear more about your adventure!

  2. Your last line is the key!
No one will notice any changes right away- and you are not doing it for them, anyway. Sometime- whether it’s one week, one month, or a year, you will find them saying- Wow! When did you change to do that?
The difference to YOU will be when the ‘world’ you didn’t know now notices the effect of what you ARE doing different.
    That’s the real deal.

  3. Well, Janine, it seems that we are in sync…As for me, I have decided to be more open to new opportunities, and to consider doing things that I have always wanted to do but always postponed (such as expanding my business, entering art competitions, being more involved with my daughters education…). In short, it is time to explore…

  4. You will probably find you have more to do than ever in your life. How about writing and photography for a start?
As for making a difference, we do that when we follow our true path in life. You’re on the way!

  5. Sometimes we need to feel lost before our inner courage awakens. You will find YOUR way Janine. Just remember to be patient. Wishing you the best! 🙂

  6. We have to do what we feel will make us happy. Anything anyone else tells us that we should or shouldn’t be doing is irrelevant. Perhaps using your time off to really delve into what it is you really want to do with the rest of your life is a prudent move. Life is too short to spend it being miserable going down a path that doesn’t feel right for us.

  7. Janine, Congrats on your attitude and your willingness to share your gifts and make a difference. Fortunately, every door that closes leads to an even more exciting door that will open. You go girl!

  8. Hey,

Both you and Muriel are in the same boat. But then you said it all yourself, do it and the world will see it later on. There are many things just waiting for you to come and attack them… do that! Attack 🙂
